Beachwood’s Location

Beachwood is a small borough in Central New Jersey tucked right along the Tom’s River that dumps into Barnegat Bay. The borough measures just less than three square miles, and was home to roughly 11,000 people and 3,700 households as of the 2010 Census. With a rich history dating back to its founding in 1917, Beachwood has evolved into a vibrant community that attracts residents and visitors alike with its picturesque landscapes, recreational opportunities, and friendly atmosphere.

While Beachwood was originally established as a summer town for vacationers who loved the water, today it has become a quaint little community of families who are drawn to the small-town feel but also like the convenience of being located close to major roadways and other larger towns such as Toms River Township to the north.

FUN FACT: Beachwood was originally established as a summer colony in 1914, backed by the publishers of the New York Tribune. For $19.60, people bought a 20×100 foot plot of land and got a six-month subscription to the Tribune as a bonus.

Only a small portion of the borough is actually located directly on the water, and those properties are the ones that are designed in more of the coastal style, with multiple levels designed to take advantage of the beautiful water views. The more inland neighborhoods are the typical tree-lined streets, and are filled with homes in a variety of architectural styles, from two-story colonials to one-story ranches.

Beachwood’s Natural Beauty

One of the main draws of Beachwood is its stunning natural surroundings. The borough boasts several parks and recreational areas that are perfect for outdoor enthusiasts. Beachwood Beach, a local favorite, provides a peaceful spot for swimming, sunbathing, and picnicking. The calm waters of the Toms River are ideal for kayaking, paddleboarding, and fishing, making it a haven for water sports enthusiasts.

The nearby Jakes Branch County Park offers hiking trails, a nature center, and a variety of wildlife, making it a great spot for nature lovers and families. The park’s observation tower provides panoramic views of the surrounding forests and wetlands, showcasing the area’s diverse ecosystem.

A Community Rich in History and Culture

Beachwood’s history is deeply intertwined with its location along the Toms River. Originally developed as a summer resort community, it quickly grew into a year-round residential area. The Beachwood Historical Alliance works to preserve the borough’s heritage, offering historical tours and maintaining archives that chronicle the area’s development over the past century.

Cultural events and festivals are a staple in Beachwood, fostering a sense of community and tradition. The annual Beachwood Fireworks display on the Fourth of July is a major highlight, drawing spectators from all over Ocean County. Additionally, the Beachwood Community Center hosts a variety of events, including craft fairs, holiday celebrations, and community meetings.

Economic and Business Opportunities

Beachwood’s economy is supported by a mix of local businesses and industries. The borough encourages small business development, with a focus on creating a supportive environment for entrepreneurs. Local shops, restaurants, and service providers thrive here, benefiting from both resident patronage and tourist traffic.

The strategic location of Beachwood near major highways and transportation hubs also makes it an ideal spot for businesses looking to serve the broader Ocean County area. This accessibility, combined with the borough’s commitment to maintaining a high quality of life, ensures that Beachwood remains a desirable place to live and work.

Beachwood, NJ, is more than just a picturesque borough by the Toms River; it’s a community that offers a high quality of life, rich history, and a wealth of recreational opportunities. Beachwood promises a welcoming atmosphere and a chance to enjoy the best of what New Jersey has to offer.
