Island Heights is a small borough in Central New Jersey, tucked on the Toms River. A quick drive down Route 37 to the east will take people to the seaside resort town of Seaside Heights.
Island Heights was originally an island, right near the mouth of Barnet Bay. It is separated from the mainland section of New Jersey by a creek, and was originally known as Johnston’s Island.
The town was originally created as a Christian family resort “under the influence with camp meetings.” Island Heights has two sister camp meeting towns in New Jersey – Ocean Grove and Cape May. And like them, Island Heights is known for its quiet, residential neighborhood and Victorian architecture.
FUN FACT: Island Heights is a dry town,
meaning the sale of alcohol is prohibited.
Island Heights totals less than one square mile of land and was home to 1,673 people and 683 households as of the 2000 Census. The borough lost 4.5 percent of its population between 2000 and 2010, but that accounted for less than 100 people since it is so small.
Island Heights homes run the gamut of both style and age. Some homes were built in the Victorian style and have been standing for a while. Still others, especially those located on the water, have a newer feel and design. Others are ranch-style, offering single-floor living.
No matter the style of home, asphalt shingles are predominantly used for the roofs, due to the climate and natural forces of the area. Island Heights homeowners have some great choices for different features and designs with asphalt shingles, though, all of which could give their home a unique look. The three main choices of roof material and style are:
Island Heights homes must be built to withstand the immediate area’s climate, which experiences fluctuations in temperature from hot to cold, and cold to hot, sometimes in quick succession. These homes also must withstand the higher winds, sand and salt that’s in the air from the nearby Barnet Bay and Atlantic Ocean.
The roof is one of the most important features of your home. After all, it keeps you and your family protected from the outside elements. That’s why it’s imperative to regularly assess the quality and lifespan of your roof and replace it before it’s too late.
